In 1845 the oldest stone in the graveyard was described as being dated 1550.
Diocese of Galloway, deanery of Farines. Half the fruits of this church were united to the archdeconry of Galloway in 1410 but this union was temporarily severed in the 1420's when several claimants strove to obtain the benefice. This was however re-united to the archdeaconry in 1425. The entire fruits, both parsonage and vicarage were then united to the archdeaconry while the cure was a vicar pensionary.
The remains of the church survive as grass-covered footings 22m by 9m and up to 1m high. The church was dedicated to St Ninian and is said to have been removed from Barwhirran in the 15th century. Another parish church was erected in Newton Stewart in 1777 but whether this church was in use until that date has not been established. A bell bearing the inscription "Campana Sancti Niniani de Penigham, M...." was associated with this church in 1684, and is now in the Stewartry Museum, Kirkcudbright.
