Graveyard Notes

Burial vault of John Dalrymple, 6th Earl of Stair 1749-1821 built within ruined church. The original burial ground was enclosed by an earth and stone bank (up to 5m thick and 1.3m high), still extant within the present stone boundary wall. In 1936 a cross incised slab, late 11th or 12th century in date, was found in the burial ground.

Ecclesiastical History

Diocese of Galloway, deanery of Rhinns. The medieval church was annexed to bishopric of Galloway before John Balliol's reign (1292-6). Both parsonage and vicarage continued to be held at the Reformation, the cure being served by a vicar pensioner.

Church Notes

The remains of the medieval parish church comprise the turf covered outline of a rectangular building, 18 x 9m overall, with remains of a possible burial enclosure, 7m square, on its north-western side. This church was replaced, probably in 17th century, by the roofless structure in the north-west corner of the burial ground, which was rebuilt in 1770 by Thomas Hall and abandoned 1862 when the present parish church was built. The interior of the roofless church has been laid out with railed burial enclosures.
