South-east of the church are two stones of Douglas family, west of the church is a headstone of William Dalrymple (d1757). Further west is a headstone of Elizabeth McKormick (d1726), and to the south-west one of John McTaggart 1743. There are no pre-1707 gravestones in the churchyard, which was still in use in 1847.
Diocese of Galloway, deanery of Farines. Church abandoned about 1830. A pendicle of Kirkinnear in 1435, the church shared its mother churches vicissitudes. There is a possibility that "Kirkcowan" commemorates a 6th century saint Eoghan.
Only the eastern gable of Kirkcowan Old Kirk remains, with doorway and lintelled window above. A new church was built in 400m to the north in 1834.
