Outstanding 18th century classical mausoleum of the Vans Agnews of Barnbarroch in the south-east corner.
Church annexed to bishopric of Galloway in 1306 but granted by Edwrd Bruce, Lord of Galloway to Whithorn Priory, confirmed by Crown in 1325 and 1451. Nevertheless, grant apparently ineffective, church remaining independant parsonage within patronage of the Earls of Douglas in th 15thC. A second attempt to unite the church to the bishopric in 1449 was revoked the following year. The church apparently remained independent until its annexation, with its Pendicle of Kirkcowan (4/13) to the Chapel Royal in Stirling in 1503/4 when Whithorn Priory held the patrnonage. Revenues of the church and Kirkcowan were thereafter divided between the sub-dean and sacristan who continued to hold them at the Reformation, the cure being served by a vicar pensioner.
The current church was built in 1828 by Paul McClure, builder, as a rectangular Gothic hall church with a tower to the west. Within the church is a 10th century Anglian cross which formerly stood in the churchyard.
